Alarm

By Muhammad Qasim

He pushed the clock before the alarm went off. What a beautiful day. The sun smiled and with it brought new opportunities. The saying, every day is a brand-new day, made all the sense in the world… a new day, new him, new opportunities and new ways to get closer to success.

He jumped out of his bed and rushed to get washed up. Singing,

“Baby, why don’t we just turn that TV off?
Three hundred and fifteen channels of nothing but bad news on,
 Well it might be me
But the way I see it,
The whole wide world has gone crazy.
So baby, why don’t we just dance? …” –why don’t we just dance 2010 Josh Turner

as he took the shower. Next was to get into his new clothes, put some body spray on and then head to the kitchen to get himself some breakfast. You can’t possibly strive for success on an empty stomach.

As the tea brewed, he reached out for his cell phone to wish them good morning. But they never replied. It didn’t matter. As long as he was happy, not getting a reply just didn’t matter. The tea was brewed, the eggs were fried, the breads were toasted and now it was time to do what meant most…

The alarm went off. He had to push the clock two three times to get it stop. What day was it? What month was it? How long had it been? Today was no new day. Just, some day.

He tried his best to get up as the clouds thundered outside. The rain poured whenever it wanted to and the sun shone whenever it pleased. Everything did what it wanted to do. Hours sometimes passed like minutes and sometimes like days. And a minute sometimes like a second and sometimes like an hour. It had been weird. So weird, for so long. When was the last time everything felt right? He just couldn’t remember.

He finally got himself to sit. Was this how being alive supposed to feel? Why was he supposed to get up today? What was the point? He reached for his cellphone and nothing. They just never texted. But he wished them good morning. They never replied. Maybe, it didn’t matter. A grey day. Grey days. Grey life.

The alarm went off. He pushed the clock. He rejoiced. He got up. What day was it? What month was it? How long had it been? He thought as the clouds thundered outside. It didn’t matter. Today was a new day. And it was raining. Things always became so beautiful when it rained. A beautiful day for a beautiful start to strive for the beautiful ending.

The alarm went off. And it kept ringing. He pulled his blanket over his head and clenched his eyes closed as the sun shone onto him. What day was it? What month was it? How long had it been? It just didn’t matter. Let the alarm just… ring.
